Galoob Toys

Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. was a San Francisco based toy company founded in 1954 by Barbara Frankel and Lewis Galoob. The company first started as an import business and later became the third largest toymaker in the United States before Hasbro purchased it in 1998. Galoob, as it was more commonly called, was best known for creating the Game Genie, a video game cheat device that allowed users to modify video games by entering certain codes.

In 1992, Nintendo of America sued Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. for copyright infringement claiming the Game Genie was a plagiaristic work that violated Nintendo’s copyright of their video games. The Court ultimately denied Nintendo’s motion and ruled in favor of Galoob Toys.
